"Be yourself. Be weird. Keep your chin up."

Model Citizen Media provides a platform to recognise fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world. Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them - their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.

Tell us about yourself, why you are passionate about what you do, and your journey so far. I'm a model and I suffer from a disease called lupus. I have had to work incredibly hard to maintain a balance in my life that allows me to stay healthy while still being able to follow my dreams. I want to let everyone know that anything is possible with hard work and determination. What are your goals and how do you see yourself progressing in the field? I would love to be able to use my voice and position to raise awareness of lupus and other chronic illnesses. I want to be able to speak up for those who can't. How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements? I'm always patient, friendly and professional. I try to be as open with the team as possible, communication is so important with a situation like mine. I've found that in most cases, in school, work, modeling, that if you are up front and honest with the people you work with they are more than likely going to do what they can to help you out and make your life easier. And I try to reciprocate that helpfulness whenever I can. If you had to do it over again, what would you change? I wouldn't be so hard on myself. I'm facing the challenges of the modeling industry on top of things that most other models don't have to deal with. I would give myself a break. Who is your hero, and how have they helped you get to where you are? My mom. She's the strongest person I know, and she always helps me look at every obstacle with humor and grace. How important are creative education courses? Have you taken any, and did you find them useful? I studied art in college, which I think has given me an edge in modeling. It allows me to think about the image as a whole, and approach every set as an artist, creating an image that will evoke a feeling or thought for the viewer. Do you have any tips for someone who is just starting out in the industry? Be yourself. Be weird. Keep your chin up. Stand up for yourself. Don't try to be like anyone else.
